Plucking

In plucking, the needle is flicked or pulled lightly and released to generate a vibration that will engage the tissues. The amplitude of movement can be large or small, depending on the stimulation desired, though plucking slightly disperses. This can be repeated several times, but in order to determine de qi, it is necessary to return periodically to the handle of the needle and test the response of the tissue between plucks (see Video 11).

Scraping

Scraping is a method that relies largely on the wire wrapping of the needle handle. This is not to say that it cannot be accomplished on needles that lack the wrapped handles, but wire wrapping makes the process easier. In scraping, the fingernail is dragged up or down the handle, over the wrapping, in order to create a vibration in the needle. Another finger is used to stabilize the needle so that it doesn’t move like plucking or shaking but rather focuses on very small and rapid vibrations. The stabilizing finger needs to be above the scraping finger, or the vibrations will be blocked by the lower fingers. As with plucking, it is important to return to the needle regularly to determine tissue response (see Video 12).
